A look into the world of the American Hockey League outside of just the normal game re-caps. A pro hockey town again? By Chris Jenkins | UT San Diego At the time, four decades ago, official capacity at the San Diego Sports Arena was set at 13,363. That particular Saturday night, more than 14,000 tickets were sold to a hockey game, an impressive fact that the San Diego Gulls proudly shared on the public-address system. “The fire marshal went berserk,” said Bruce Binkowski, the front-office employee who announced the attendance. “The next time we sold more than 14,000 seats, we only announced 13,363.” The point is, there was a “next time.” The Gulls — despite playing in a much smaller city than it is today, a … Continue reading

Could Albany Lose Team

A look into the world of the American Hockey League outside of just the normal game re-caps. Could Albany, Glens Falls lose hockey teams? League realignment plan could have an effect on fates of Flames, Devils By Pete Dougherty | Times Union California, here we come. The American Hockey League hasn’t adopted the slogan yet, but it may soon fit. The 79-year-old circuit, which develops players for the National Hockey League, is on the verge of creating a group of Golden State affiliates. The plan, which has been in the works for 21/2 years, may affect the future of the two Capital Region AHL franchises. AHL president Dave Andrews, unavailable Monday for comment on this story, has said previously that owners of many NHL Western Conference teams want … Continue reading

AHL Movement Madness: Is Your Team Safe?

The dominoes are slowly falling but when the dust settles, the American Hockey League landscape could be something more resembling Jenga. Where the pieces or in this case the teams, fit and or fall, is anyone’s guess. First it was the announcement that the Oklahoma City Barons will cease operations at the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. Now there’s news, the Norfolk Admirals will raise anchor and change coasts. While it’s hardly news that there will be an AHL Pacific Division, come 2015, this chain reaction could have reverberations far beyond Oklahoma City, Norfolk, Manchester, Worcester, Glens Falls, etc. Not to be an alarmist or create mass speculation but if you think your team is safe, you may want to think again. If the initial … Continue reading

Methot has been dealing with back trouble since last April at the world championships. Methot had previously considered a conditioning stint while Paul MacLean was in town, but as Bruce Garrioch tweeted Thursday, it sounded as though MacLean was blocking any prospects of an AHL stint. The conditioning stint is set to begin this weekend and Methot is likely to return to Ottawa after Sunday. Binghamton is set to play Saturday and Sunday, in two games where Methot … Continue reading

AHL New York State Of Mind

If the AHL season ended today, well that would be one short tease of a season. All joking aside, the top of the AHL standings have a distinctly Empire State look about them. Pacing the field and positioned atop the Western Conference are the Utica Comets with 14 points. Jump over to the Eastern Conference and you’ll find the Albany Devils and their 13 points leading the charge up top. Mind you, in a New York minute, everything can change. That said, there was a lot to be excited about along the Thruway in October. Utica Comets (6-1-2-0, 14 points, 1st place Western Conference) – Jacob Markstrom knows a thing or two about playing in Upstate, suiting up for 37 games with the Rochester Americans … Continue reading
