Albany Players Return: Who Says You Can’t Go Home?

You can go home again. Just ask Scott Clemmensen and Mark Fraser of the Albany Devils. Recently, Clemmensen was sent down by the New Jersey Devils and Fraser signed an AHL contract with Albany. Both began their professional careers in Albany, playing for the Albany River Rats, when they were a Devils affiliate. In fact, Clemmensen and his future Albany teammates, Brian Gionta and Bobby Allen, won the 2000-01 NCAA Men’s Hockey championship at the then Pepsi Arena, for the Boston College Eagles. While Fraser got into four games with the Rats in 2006 and also played for the A-Devils in 2011-12. I’m pretty sure that somewhere deep within the bowels of the now Times Union Center, there are cardboard cutouts of Clemmer and Ari … Continue reading

AHL New York State Of Mind

If the AHL season ended today, well that would be one short tease of a season. All joking aside, the top of the AHL standings have a distinctly Empire State look about them. Pacing the field and positioned atop the Western Conference are the Utica Comets with 14 points. Jump over to the Eastern Conference and you’ll find the Albany Devils and their 13 points leading the charge up top. Mind you, in a New York minute, everything can change. That said, there was a lot to be excited about along the Thruway in October. Utica Comets (6-1-2-0, 14 points, 1st place Western Conference) – Jacob Markstrom knows a thing or two about playing in Upstate, suiting up for 37 games with the Rochester Americans … Continue reading

Paul Thompson Leads Veteran Charge For Albany Devils

In the modern day American Hockey League, there is a lot more emphasis on player development. It is a source of pride for a league which saw over 133 AHLers make their NHL debuts during the 2013-14 campaign. Yet in the process of developing and winning, having veteran players to bolster a roster and lead the way, is still important. This off-season the Albany Devils signed one such veteran AHL free agent. They chose Paul Thompson and they chose wisely. Thus far the shrewd move is paying early dividends for the A-Devils. Following a nice preseason showing, Thompson has started his Albany career with a bang, posting an AHL leading six goals, through four contests. Included in that was an impressive debut in which Thompson … Continue reading

A look into the world of the American Hockey League outside of just the normal game re-caps. Will Hamilton Bulldogs regret passing on high-scoring veterans? By Scott Radley | Hamilton Spectator The opening days of any hockey team’s training camp are always thick with optimism. Everything’s fresh and better. All slates are clean. Last year is in the past. So today it’s possible to believe many of the young men who will eventually be released from the Montreal Canadiens’ camp — which opens on Thursday — and handed a bus ticket to Hamilton will make this year different from the last three in which the Bulldogs missed the playoffs each time. Hopefully, that’s the case. But if it turns out they’re not yet quite ready for primetime … Continue reading
