The NHL is coming to Seattle, just in case you hadn’t heard anything about that over the last few months. That also means the expansion hockey franchise is going to need a minor-league team, which we had not heard much about until Monday.
The American Hockey League’s president and CEO David Andrews gave his state of the league address before Monday’s All-Star Classic in Springfield, Mass., and during it, he addressed a potential AHL team for Seattle. Read More
Brendan Guhle’s steady development lands him in AHL All-Star Classic
ROCHESTER – The winter getaway to Orlando was booked. Sabres prospect Brendan Guhle planned to spend the American Hockey League All-Star break relaxing and recharging with his girlfriend, Victoria, at Disney World.
Then on Thursday, Americans coach Chris Taylor informed the defenseman that he would be replacing injured teammate Zach Redmond in Monday’s AHL All-Star Classic.
Instead of jetting to Florida for the first time, Guhle is in Springfield, Mass. He took part in three events — fastest skater, hardest shot and breakaway relay — during the AHL Skills Competition on Sunday. His time of 13.6 seconds in the fastest skater competition was the sixth-fastest in event history. Read more
AHL Hall of Fame welcomes Class of 2019
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League today formally inducted four new members into its American Hockey League Hall of Fame.
The AHL Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony took place at MGM Springfield as part of the festivities that are making up the 2019 Lexus AHL All-Star Classic presented by MGM Springfield.
Honored for their outstanding achievements and contributions in the American Hockey League were John Anderson, winner of 424 regular-season games and two Calder Cup championships as head coach of the Chicago Wolves; Don Cherry, a four-time Calder Cup winner who starred in Springfield, Hershey and Rochester and later won AHL Coach of the Year honors; Murray Eaves, a two-time Calder Cup winner and the AHL’s career leader in points per game with 680 points in 536 contests; and Brad Smyth, a two-time 50-goal scorer who racked up 667 career points while also earning an MVP award and a Calder Cup title. AHL president: League not concerned about Penguins’ ongoing lease talks

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — David Andrews is aware of the ongoing negotiations between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority (LCCCA), which owns Mohegan Sun Arena, on a new lease.
But the American Hockey League President and CEO said Monday that the the league doesn’t see the talks as a concern for the future of pro hockey in Wilkes-Barre.
Giving his annual state of the league address before the AHL’s All-Star Classic, Andrews spoke of his knowledge of the many lease negotiations that every AHL team faces in his 25 years leading the league. Read More
