Less than a year ago, on draft day, Hawks general manager Stan Bowman was touting Brandon Pirri as his second-line center of the future. But on Sunday, Bowman traded Pirri to Florida for a third-round draft pick this June and a fifth-round pick in 2016.

Pirri, the AHL’s leading scorer last season, had six goals and five assists in 28 games with the Hawks this season, but never showed the all-around game Joel Quenneville wanted to see from him. With highly skilled Teuvo Teravainen in the pipeline, Pirri — a restricted free agent after this season — clearly was no longer a part of the Hawks’ long-term plans. Read More…

Fired up Hershey Bears head coach Mike Haviland ejected for dispute with referee David Banfield

It took until March 2, but Hershey Bears head coach Mike Haviland got his first ejection of the season during the second period of Sunday’s 6-3 loss to the Charlotte Checkers at Giant Center.

Haviland, known for his fiery bench demeanor, was given a minor penalty and game misconduct by referee David Banfield for arguing about a non-icing call preceding a Ryan Murphy goal at 10:15 that gave Charlotte a 3-0 lead. Icing would have negated the scoring sequence.

Defenseman Jack Hillen, down from the Washington Capitals and playing a conditioning game with Hershey, was the lead player in pursuit of the puck. Read More…

Wolves acquire Selleck and Janik in pair of deals

Utica Comets’ Frank DuRoss and Robert Esche honored by Chamber of Commerce

Frank DuRoss and Robert Esche teamed up to bring a successful AHL franchise back to Utica, and now they will stand together as recipients of a local award honoring those efforts.

DuRoss and Esche together have been named the 2013 “Business Person of the Year” by the Greater Utica Chamber of Commerce. DuRoss and Esche will receive their awards at the Chamber’s Annual Membership Meeting on April 22. Read More…

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. … The American Hockey League announced today that Oklahoma City Barons center Mark Arcobello has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Mar. 2, 2014.

Arcobello tallied three goals and four assists for seven points in three games as the Barons closed the gap in the Western Conference playoff chase with three critical victories. Read More…
